What is TDS?

TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) is a mechanism to collect income tax in advance. The payer deducts tax before making payment and deposits it with the government.

This ensures regular tax collection and prevents tax evasion. TDS is deducted on various payments like salary, interest, professional fees, rent, etc.

Key Point: TDS is NOT an additional tax. It's advance tax that gets adjusted against your final tax liability when you file ITR.

Important Points

  • TDS certificate (Form 16/16A) is mandatory from deductor
  • Claim TDS refund if tax deducted exceeds actual liability
  • Always provide PAN to avoid 20% TDS rate
  • Form 15G/15H can be submitted if total income is below taxable limit
  • Check TDS credit in Form 26AS on income tax portal
  • Mismatch in TDS may delay refund processing
