The profit on an asset sold after holding it longer than the period the law sets for that kind of asset.
Listed shares and equity mutual funds become long-term after 12 months; property, gold and unlisted shares after 24 months. The holding period is counted from date to date, not in rounded months.
For transfers from 23 Jul 2024, long-term gains on listed equity are taxed at 12.5% on the amount above ₹1,25,000 a year, and most other long-term gains at 12.5% without indexation. Units of debt mutual funds bought from 1 Apr 2023 are never long-term.
Figures on this page are filled from the same tax and scheme tables the calculators use, for the current financial year. Every term in the glossary.
